Joni Mitchell has spoken about her surprise appearance at the Newport Folk Festival in 2022 during the 2024 Grammys ceremony. Mitchell, who was nominated for Best Folk Album for the live recording of the festival, made a rare public appearance to collect the award at the pre-ceremony event. Brandi Carlile, who also performed with Mitchell, joined her on stage.
“We had so much fun at that concert. I think you can feel it on the record. It’s a very joyous record because of the people that I played with, and the spirit of the occasion was very high, and it went onto the record. Even the audience sounds like music. Thank you,” Mitchell said to the crowd, who gave her a standing ovation.
The award takes Mitchell’s Grammy count to 10 across her career, with her first win coming in 1969 for Best Folk Performance for ‘Clouds.’ She won her most recent victory in 2022 with the Best Historical Album Grammy for ‘Joni Mitchell Archives – Vol. 1: The Early Years (1963–1967).’ Mitchell is set to perform at the Grammys’ telecast ceremony.
Among the nominees for the 2024 Grammys are SZA with nine nominations, and Olivia Rodrigo, Phoebe Bridgers, Taylor Swift, and Miley Cyrus. Other acts set to perform at the event include Travis Scott, Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, and U2. NME.com will provide full coverage of the ceremony, including winners, as they are announced
