Mari Grug, a Welsh TV presenter, has opened up about her journey with breast cancer and how chemotherapy felt like a friend to her during the battle. Mari’s cancer had spread to her lymph nodes and liver, which at first led her to believe that she would require palliative care. However, after six rounds of chemotherapy, the cancer in Mari’s liver shrunk significantly. Despite this, the cancer in her breast was not budging, leading to a mastectomy and removal of her lymph nodes.
Speaking about her fight, Mari stated that whilst waiting between appointments for results was the biggest challenge she faced, chemotherapy was comforting. She noted that it felt like “something positive” and that one had “to go through it to feel better”. As for her mindset, Mari stated that “what helps my state of mind is when you’ve had the worst possible news. The least I can do now is to feel fortunate and grateful for the chance to fight it.”
Mari wants to ensure that women seek medical help regarding any health concern they may have, adding that going to the doctor would put one on the journey to treatment if necessary, and that staying home and worrying isn’t helpful to anyone. She also advised women to get genetic testing and undergo radiotherapy on their chest walls to prevent breast cancer from returning.
Mari’s journey has not only been an emotional one for her family, but her sharing of updates on social media and continuing to present on the Welsh channel S4C has given others hope. Mari has received many messages from women in the same situation who have been inspired by her. She stated that “life doesn’t have to come to a stop” even during times of crisis
