Steve Brown, the acclaimed comedy composer, has sadly passed away at the age of 66 after battling fibrosis lung disease. Brown was well known for his work with entertainers such as Steve Coogan and Harry Hill. He played the bandleader Glenn Ponder on the hit television show Knowing Me, Knowing You with Alan Partridge, and was responsible for writing and arranging all of the show’s music. In addition to this, Brown worked on many other popular British television comedies like Spitting Image, Dead Ringers, Not Going Out, and Harry Hill’s TV Burp.
The news of Brown’s passing was confirmed by his agent Vivienne Clore via social media. “Devastated to share the news that our much-loved client Steve Brown has passed away,” she wrote. Harry Hill, a long-time friend and collaborator, paid tribute to the composer, describing him as “the best-kept secret in showbiz”. Brown worked on numerous projects with Hill, including Tea Time, Alien Fun Capsule, and The Harry Hill Movie.
In addition to his work in television, Brown was also an accomplished record producer. He produced ‘Seasons of My Soul’, the debut album of Rumer in 2010 and Laura Mvula’s 2013 album ‘Sing to the Moon’. Brown also had a hand in several stage productions, including Spend Spend Spend, I Can’t Sing, and TONY! The Tony Blair Rock Opera. Steve Brown will be sorely missed. A statement from producers of the latter show reads: “A musical and comedy legend who brought joy to so many people through his genius writing. Thank you, Steve, for all the laughter – we shall miss you.”
Brown is survived by his two sons Alfie and Lenny, from his first marriage to comedian and impressionist Jan Ravens. He married actor Deborah Cornelius in 2010. As news of his passing spread, tributes to Brown poured in from across social media, with many expressing their shock and sadness at the loss of such a talented and beloved man
