Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet has been joined by a group of new Assistant Cabinet Members appointed to support their work. The members, who were selected by the council’s leader Cllr Liam Robinson, will be unpaid and will not have decision-making responsibilities or voting rights at cabinet meetings. Instead, their roles will involve completing specific tasks given to them by relevant Cabinet Members, attending conferences and meetings, and liaising with non-executive members to ensure that the Cabinet is aware of key issues. The new members have been welcomed by Robinson.
They will work with Members with responsibility for Growth and Economy, Health Wellbeing and Culture, Adult Social Care and Health, Employment, Educational Attainment and Skills, and Neighbourhoods, Communities and Streetscene. Each Assistant Cabinet Member will focus on a specific area, such as Libraries or Health. The ultimate goal is to support the delivery of Liverpool City Council’s priorities and objectives, helping to improve life for the city’s residents.
In terms of their specific duties, Assistant Cabinet Members will carry out research and attend meetings, liaise with other members as required, and attend Cabinet Briefings with Member Cabinet teams. They will also speak at events and functions on key issues, provided they have received a specific invitation to do so. Ultimately, the new appointments are part of Liverpool City Council’s broader strategy of ensuring good governance and delivering meaningful policy outcomes.
In a statement released by the council, Robinson outlined his vision for the new assistant members: “The Assistant Cabinet Members will bring valuable knowledge and experience within their area of focus, helping Cabinet Members deliver improvements for our residents. I’m excited to work alongside these councillors to ensure we work collaboratively towards our shared goals and continue to make the City of Liverpool a great place to live, work and invest in.”
