True Detective’s fourth season, subtitled Night Country, is currently airing on HBO, with the third episode having been broadcasted on January 28. Police chief Liz Danvers, played by Jodie Foster, leads an investigation into the disappearance of eight men from a research station in Alaska. The Oscar-nominated actor John Hawkes and Killing Eve’s Fiona Shaw also star in the series, which is directed and co-written by Issa López. Episodes air on Sunday nights on HBO in the US and the UK the following day via Sky and NOW, with the final episode scheduled to air on February 18.

In a five-star review, NME describes the show as “brilliant winter TV: scary, suspenseful and smartly constructed to leave you pondering every last plot twist and shock reveal.” The theme song for the season, ‘bury a friend’, is sung by Billie Eilish and comes from her 2019 debut album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?. Showrunner Issa López chose the song, commenting “I knew that the series was going to need a powerful anthem, a showstopper, honestly. When we were doing the titles, I tried several things and then I realised that the lyrics of this song seem to be written for the series.”

Other songs featured in the series include ‘Twist and Shout’ by The Beatles, ‘Sweat (A La La La La Long)’ by Inner Circle, ‘Magpie’ by The Unthanks, ‘You Are Amen’ by Pollyester, ‘Black Sedan’ by Charley Crockett, ‘Rescue Me’ by Unions, ‘State of the Art (A.E.I.O.U.)’by Jim James, ‘Little Saint Nick’ by The Beach Boys, ‘It Came to Me’ by The Barr Brothers, ‘You’re the First, the Last, My Everything’ by Barry White, ‘Wannabe’ by Spice Girls, ‘I Love You Love You’ by Johnny Cash, ‘Pass Them By’ by Agnes Obel, ‘Camera’s Rolling’ by Agnes Obel, ‘Seven Devils’ by Florence + the Machine, ‘Sing Sing’ by The Bones of J.R. Jones, ‘Like I Do’ by Georgina Birch, ‘Limbo’ by Lissom and ‘I Follow Rivers’ by Marika Hackman
