The family of Eileen Dean, a 93-year-old resident of a care home who was killed by another resident earlier this year, has spoken out against a proposal that could allow the killer to go on escorted leave from the secure hospital where he is being held. Alexander Rawson, who was 62 at the time of the attack and had a history of alcoholism-related mental health issues, was sentenced to indefinite detention in a secure hospital following the attack on Mrs. Dean. His doctor has now submitted a request for escorted leave and is awaiting approval from the justice secretary.
Mrs. Dean’s daughter, Georgina Hampshaw, has called the proposal “ill-conceived and abhorrent” and has accused Rawson’s clinicians of contempt for victims, comparing the case to that of Valdo Calocane, a mentally ill man who killed three people in Nottingham last year. Both families believe that their loved ones were cheated of justice by not having the killers face trial for murder.
