Jake Shears launches new podcast ‘Queer The Music’ with Self Esteem, Olly Alexander, Peaches and more

Jake Shears, the frontman of Scissor Sisters, has launched a new podcast called “Queer The Music” in association with Mercury Studios. The podcast aims to explore the LGBTQ+ anthems that have ruled dance floors and helped revolutionize politics, perception, and popular culture. During the first series, Shears will converse with courageous queer artists and allies about the stories behind one record that has been a game-changer for the LGBTQ+ community.

The podcast’s first two episodes are already available to stream and watch on YouTube. Episode one features Jeanie Tracy and biographer Josh Gamson, who are both close to the late Sylvester, and zooms in on his iconic 70s track “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real).” The second episode features Shears and castmate Self Esteem in “Cabaret at The Kit Kat Club” in a discussion about anti-patriarchy modern classic “I Do This All The Time” while spotlighting queer women’s still underrepresented experiences in the mainstream.

Shears has invited other prestigious guests like Olly Alexander, Peaches, King Princess, Rufus Wainwright, and Skin, and more names will be revealed soon. The frontman has constantly tried to be unapologetically himself and is thrilled to host “Queer The Music” that will celebrate influential LGBTQ+ artists and the anthems that have been the soundtrack of queer lives.

Shears wants to explore the concept of queer music and whether it boxes the community in and purposely created, or if it even exists at all. The LGBTQ+ community has been making outstanding popular music for decades, and Shears is eager to delve into how the process and reception of it have evolved, tracing the lineage and legacy, and figuring out how LGBTQ+ artists fit within it together.

Mercury Studios CEO, Alice Webb, mentioned that there’s no better person than Jake Shears to tell these important stories, adding that they are delighted to collaborate with him on this genre-hopping podcast series that unveils the remarkable songs and artists who defied music and acceptance boundaries. In other news, last year, Shears performed a duet with Rufus Wainwright at London’s Royal Albert Hall
