The Southbank Centre has announced that the 29th artist to curate the annual contemporary music festival, Meltdown Festival, will be Chaka Khan, with the event scheduled for June 14 to June 23 in London. Khan, who was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and has won 10 Grammy Awards, will use her 50-year career as a singer to bring a “celebration like no other” to the 10-day festival.
This event comes 45 years after the singer’s breakthrough with her eponymous debut album, ‘Chaka’ in 1978. Adem Holness, the Head of Contemporary Music at Southbank Centre, expressed his delight and added that the festival could not be a celebration of her legendary career without her ‘fabulousness, wicked sense of humour and iconic genre-defying music’.
In recent years, Meltdown has built a reputation for unique one-off performances and collaborations from some of the most recognised names in music. Past curators include David Bowie, Robert Smith, and Lou Reed, all of whom brought their flair and influence to the blend of art and sound.
Last year’s edition was curated by Christine And The Queens and featured performances from some big names in the business, including Sigur Rós, Yemi Alade, Johnny Jewel, Warpaint and Lynks. The artist lineup in the upcoming 2024 instalment is set to be revealed in March
