Firefighters have declared a “major incident” after a blaze broke out in a four-storey building near Liverpool’s city centre. Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) sent 12 fire engines to the scene and over 50 firefighters are working to tackle the fire. Thankfully, there have been no reports of casualties so far. Despite this, neighbouring properties have been evacuated as the building is in danger of collapsing.
According to MFRS, the fire has been “divided into four sectors, with ground monitor main branch hoses, multiple main branch hoses and a combined platform ladder in use”. The representative added that “twelve fire engines and two aerial appliances are still on scene”. Merseyside Police are helping with evacuations and a cordon is in place around the building and the wider area.
People have been warned to avoid the area and local residents have been advised to shut windows and doors. Huge plumes of smoke could be seen across the city, including over Goodison Park during Everton’s FA Cup tie against Luton Town, as well as from across the River Mersey in Wirral.
The cause of the fire is not yet known, but this incident serves as a reminder of the hard work and bravery of the firefighters who put their lives on the line to keep us safe. Our thoughts go out to all those affected by this devastating event
