Following the news that King Charles underwent treatment for an enlarged prostate, Queen Camilla visited her husband in the hospital the day after the procedure. The Palace confirmed that the King is “doing well” after being admitted on Friday and that he would remain there for an undisclosed amount of time, though reports suggest that he could be there for the weekend. In the lead-up to his procedure, the King visited the Princess of Wales who had undergone abdominal surgery at the same hospital the week prior.
It was revealed last week that the 75-year-old King was scheduled to undergo a “corrective procedure”. According to the NHS, an enlarged prostate is benign and non-cancerous, and it is common in older men, with around one in three men over the age of 50 experiencing symptoms. There will not be a need for “counsellors of state” who can stand in when a monarch is seriously ill, as the King’s medical treatment is not significant enough to require any constitutional changes regarding his role as head of state.
The King made his diagnosis public to encourage other men to get their prostates checked, which in turn prompted an increase in searches on the NHS website about enlarged prostates. A Buckingham Palace spokesperson reported that the King “was delighted to learn that his diagnosis is having a positive impact on public health awareness” and thanked all those who have sent their good wishes.
Queen Camilla accompanied the King to London Clinic private hospital, where both she and the King are currently staying, near Regent’s Park. The Queen reassured people inside the hospital that her husband was “doing well, thank you” before her visit ended. Later in the day, she returned for a visit that lasted about an hour and a half.
The Palace hasn’t provided any further information as to how long the King will remain in the hospital or the specifics of his treatment, but their statement confirms that he is currently recovering
