Aisling Gallagher, a fashion blogger from Crumlin, County Antrim, was only 28 when she began radiotherapy treatment for rectal cancer which resulted in an early menopause. Aisling urges people to talk about this subject that is often considered a taboo. As a result of being treated for cancer, Aisling underwent premature menopause. She had to wait until the conclusion of her treatment before she was able to use Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) to reduce her symptoms.
Aisling believes that the younger generation needs to be educated about premature menopause, and its likely causes, in order to make it easier for others to navigate. Even though Aisling’s symptoms started with hot flushes while receiving cancer treatment, it was hard to identify the side effects. As a result, the main reality of going through early menopause is not being able to have children, according to Aisling. Due to this reason, she would have to inform people she is dating about this situation.
The UK-based organization, The Daisy Network agrees with Aisling’s sentiment. It supports young women who are diagnosed with Premature Ovarian Insufficiency. Infertility can significantly affect someone’s mental health, according to Corinna Bordoli from the organization. While menstruation is taught in both primary and post-primary school, the Department of Education acknowledges that menopause may not currently be taught in schools due to the age profile of pupils.
Aisling suggests taking things one day at a time. She also believes that if everyone was educated more on this topic, there would be greater awareness. “Every woman is going to go through the menopause no matter what age it happens – it definitely needs to be spoken about more,” she said
