Constance Marten and Mark Gordon, who are accused of manslaughter by gross negligence, perverting the course of justice, concealing the birth of a child, child cruelty, and causing or allowing the death of a child, appeared in court this week. The Old Bailey played a video of their car after it caught fire on the M61 in Greater Manchester on 5 January 2023. The footage was taken by a passing driver, Ken Hudson, who refused the couple’s offer of money for a lift to the nearest service station.

During the recording, Mark Gordon can be heard asking for help, while Constance Marten assures Mr Hudson that their baby is fine. Mr Hudson asked the couple if their child was okay because he could not see her in the footage. Although the couple was initially reluctant to show their newborn, they eventually revealed her to Mr Hudson. The jury was shown the video after Mr Hudson finished testifying.
