Cliff ‘CliffyB’ Bleszinski, the designer of the popular game God of War, has revealed that he had once pitched the idea of a game similar to Palworld to Epic Games but was turned down. Though the idea was based on “Medieval Pokemon with baby dragons,” it just never went anywhere and Bleszinski had wanted to create the game for mobile platforms first.
Palworld’s Early Access release has quickly made it one of the most successful games on Steam, with the developers, PocketPair, stating that more than 8 million copies of the game had already been sold in just a week of its release. Palworld has also become the second game ever to reach 2 million concurrent players on Steam, the first being PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.
In response to the success of Palworld, Bleszinski felt validated in having had an idea similar to that of Palworld turned down by Epic Games years ago. Bleszinski worked as lead designer on the first three God of War games, and between 1992 and 2012 worked at Epic Games before co-founding Boss Key Productions which closed down in 2018 due to low sales of its multiplayer shooter Lawbreakers.
The creators of Palworld have been accused of infringing Pokemon intellectual property rights with the game. However, the creators have responded that while the game was inspired by Pokemon, it was influenced far more by action-oriented games like Rust, Minecraft, and ARK: Survival Evolved, among others.
On another note, Sony has officially confirmed that a “complete” edition of Horizon Forbidden West will be made available on PC later this year
