The impact of a recent warehouse fire belonging to Owens Group on Bridgend Industrial Estate is still being felt by neighbouring businesses, according to local shop owners. The fire, which broke out on a Friday evening, caused a building approximately the size of three football pitches to collapse due to extensive damage. Luckily no one was injured, however the effects have still been financially devastating to those working nearby.
Scott Magill, the owner of Whocult Donuts, was forced to close his business for four days due to severed electricity supply, despite not even being situated on the same site as the fire. The closure caused a significant loss of trade for the small independent business which has a total of three branches. Mr Magill said, “We’ve lost four days of trade which is a big financial hit for a small independent business like us. But the fire didn’t get to us and we’re super grateful to the fire brigade for managing to contain it and keep us all safe.”
Furthermore, Benchmark Scenic Construction, a company which makes scenery and props for the film and television industry, was situated close to the main warehouse and also caught fire. Owner Tom Berrow has not been able to access the site since and fears that a lot of what was inside may have been destroyed. However, he is determined to rebuild the business as soon as he can and has received offers of help from the industry.
