There is much speculation amongst fans of ‘True Detective’ as to whether a well-known character from the series will make a comeback in season four. After some connections were made between the various seasons, viewers can’t help but wonder if there is more to come. The highly-anticipated crime drama series titled ‘True Detective: Night Country’ recently premiered on HBO, starring Jodie Foster as lead Detective Liz Danvers who is tasked with investigating the vanishing of a group of men from an Alaskan research station. Reviews have been mainly positive for the latest series, but fans have been quick to pick up on some recurring elements.
After the airing of the second episode, viewers began noticing some links to the first season, which premiered in 2014 with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in the lead roles. A strange presence appears and guides Fiona Shaw’s character, Rose, to the location of some lifeless bodies buried in the snow. It’s revealed that the phantasm was her lost lover, Travis Cohle, who chose to die in the cold rather than from leukaemia. As some fans have pointed out, Travis is the father of McConaughey’s character, Rustin ‘Rust’ Cohle, and had been mentioned during the show’s pilot episode. Rust informs Harrelson’s character, Martin Hart, that his father had leukaemia, and that he himself had grown up in Alaska, where ‘True Detective: Night Country’ is set.
In yet another connection with earlier seasons, a symbol is engraved onto the forehead of one of the bodies in the snow that Rose and her team discovered. The symbol is the very same as seen on the back of a murder victim in season one of the show and was eventually associated with an evil spirit group. Coincidentally, Rust had begun seeing the symbol everywhere he went until he finally cracked the case. In this latest season, the symbol is frequently referred to by Rose, who enquires as to whether Detective Navarro (played by Kali Reis) had seen it before.
Although the new series has received some negative feedback from fans, showrunner Issa López has blamed this largely on fans over-criticising the latest instalment because they are unhappy with how the earlier seasons ended. For instance, some have taken issue with the supernatural elements that have been included. Nevertheless, the occasional links to earlier seasons have managed to pique the interest of loyal ‘True Detective’ followers, who eagerly anticipate season four’s next developments
