Shaun Ryder’s plans to create a biopic of his life entitled “Twisting My Melon” have been derailed due to creative differences. In 2013, ITV announced that they were set to serialize Ryder’s autobiography of the same name. Finally, in 2019, Jack O’Connell was announced as the lead actor. The movie was also written by the scriptwriter of “Control” and “Nowhere Boy,” Matt Greenhalgh.
However, even though Greenhalgh was set to direct the film, there was a disagreement between him and the film’s American funders. The Americans didn’t want the movie that Greenhalgh had in mind, their ideas were more focused on a generic biopic than an authentic retelling of Ryder’s life. They attempted to force Greenhalgh to add various elements that were traditionally found in biopics, which eventually led to the American funding being withdrawn.
Despite the setbacks, Greenhalgh is still committed to getting “Twisting My Melon” made. In a recent interview with Classic Pop (via Music News), Ryder revealed that Greenhalgh is actively looking for new backers. He hopes that he can eventually get the movie made the way it was originally intended.
Although the film’s production schedule was suppose to have started in Manchester in 2020, many names have yet to be revealed. Until the creative issues can be ironed out, it’s unclear when the project will restart. Notable names including Jason Isaacs, Maxine Peake, and Holliday Grainger have been rumored to be joining the cast. Even Christian Bale, a noted fan of Ryder, has expressed his desire to play him, admitting that it would be “a lot of fun to play.
