Canadian rapper Drake has taken aim at the media, accusing it of “cashing out on negativity.” The musician referenced a clip he shared on social media featuring retired American football coach Nick Saban, in which he called for people to give young individuals space to recover from their mistakes. Saban also argued that they should be given a second chance to succeed after errors of judgment.
Drake argued that the media is increasingly discouraging the young from finding their way, adding that the noise is calculated. This follows comments he made last year about the industry at the Rolling Loud Festival, when he accused it of suppressing new talent.
Fellow rapper Chuck D echoed Drake’s views in an interview on Cuomo, saying that “culture media” was superior to social media. Chuck D added that social media was chaotic and lacked depth, whilst culture media focused on the art, music, and the craft of creating it. He said he had launched the app Bring the Noise to give people a new platform to discover new music and other art forms.
In addition to his comments, Drake has postponed the start of his ‘It’s All A Blur’ tour, which was meant to begin this week. He has also become embroiled in a spat with fellow musician Yasiin Bey, who called Drake a “pop” artist whose music was “compatible with shopping” rather than hip-hop
