Irish actor Paul Mescal has finished filming the upcoming sequel to the 2000 film Gladiator, directed by Ridley Scott. Mescal’s involvement in Gladiator 2 was confirmed in January 2023, with Scott announcing he had written the screenplay for the film in 2021. The cast of the sequel also includes Pedro Pascal and Denzel Washington. Mescal confirmed on The Graham Norton Show that he had finished filming the day before his appearance on the show, and joked that he had “survived it.”

When asked about a potential release date, Mescal initially hesitated, stating that he might be assassinated if he disclosed any further information. However, he relented and suggested a possible release date of Thanksgiving 2023. Mescal also shared details about the casting process, revealing that Scott had called him while he was performing in A Streetcar Named Desire.

Scott had previously explained his decision to cast Mescal as the lead in Gladiator 2, revealing that he had watched the actor’s performance in the television series Normal People. Scott said he had never seen the show before, but he watched four episodes in a row and was immediately struck by Mescal’s talent. “And then I watched the whole series”, Scott said, adding that he couldn’t stop thinking about Mescal after reading the Gladiator 2 script.
