In recent news, the popular murder mystery drama Fool Me Once has become one of Netflix’s most-watched shows, receiving over 37 million streams. Northern viewers may have been excited to see several famous spots from the region featured in the series. This drama is the sixth one by Harlan Coben to be picked up by the streaming giant and is based on his novel of the same name.
Despite Harlan Coben’s novels being set in New Jersey, all of the Netflix adaptations (Safe, The Stranger, Stay Close, and Fool Me Once) are located in the North West. The show’s executive producer, Richard Fee, from Quay Street Studios, believes that the region was an ideal choice for filming because of the abundance of available locations. The show’s creators also selected the North West to remain relatable to a global audience.
Michelle Keegan, who plays Maya Stern in the series, spoke to BBC Radio 2 in January, describing her experience of filming in places she had worked before as being “surreal.” Keegan also mentioned the “gorgeous” settings and how she found it a bit bizarre to film some scenes in locations she frequented in real life.
The grand Arley Hall mansion in Cheshire, a fan-favorite location, is where some of the climactic scenes in Fool Me Once were filmed. The hall’s general manager, Bridget Roberts, stated that guests were overjoyed to watch the behind-the-scenes action during filming. According to Mr. Fee, replicating the distance characters travel in Coben’s novels was the most challenging aspect of the adaptation to the UK. To convey this sense of distance, fictitious locations and landmarks, as well as the Runcorn bridge, were utilized.
Fans are interested in spotting repeated locations in the “Harlan Coben Universe.” To keep this in mind, the production team kept returning to the same locations, such as the sports club featured in both Fool Me Once and The Stranger. Ultimately, fans enjoy seeing these locations repeatedly and consider them to be a fun part of watching the show
