Jlin, the American electronic producer, has announced the release of her new album titled “Akoma” on March 22 via Planet Mu Records. The eleven-track album features collaborations with several acclaimed artists, including legendary minimalist composer Philip Glass, experimental American string quartet Kronos Quartet, and Icelandic singer Björk. Björk appears on the album’s opening track, “Borealis,” marking her first appearance on a new track since her Rosalía collaboration “Oral” last year. Jlin’s last standalone studio album was 2017’s “Black Origami,” which featured collaborations with musicians like Holly Herndon and William Basinski.
Jlin confirmed the surprise release of the album on her Instagram account and also shared the first track from it, “The Precision of Infinity.” The track features Philip Glass, and the video is available on YouTube. The unique features of the footwork genre, which sprang from Chicago house and features syncopated rhythms and sub-bass frequencies, are central to the album’s sound.
Jlin has preannounced several festival appearances in 2024, including London’s In the Round Festival, Bozar in Brussels, Mutek in Barcelona, Rewire in The Hague, and Big Ears Festival in Knoxville. The pre-order for “Akoma” is currently available on Bandcamp, featuring the limited gold vinyl 2LP, CD, and digital versions.
Björk recently finished her “Cornucopia” tour, which had been running since 2019, and intends to start writing her new album in 2024. “NME” watched “Cornucopia” in London back in 2019, describing it as an “audacious, expectation-disrupting spectacular from an artist unbothered with people-pleasing.
