London-based singer Rachel Chinouriri has announced the arrival of her debut album, titled What A Devastating Turn Of Events. The release, which will be available on May 3 via Parlaphone/Atlas Artists, will feature Chinouriri’s new single Never Need Me alongside her recent lead track, The Hills.
Never Need Me is an introspective look at putting oneself first, something Chinouriri does in her own life. A press release for the song reveals the inspiration behind the track: “Sometimes you end up enabling someone instead of actually helping them and carrying their load is tough. ‘Never Need Me’ is the moment you wish them well but you can’t continue to harm yourself by helping them. It’s always a tough decision to make but once you make it, it’s a weight lifted off your shoulders for sure.”
Chinouriri was recently interviewed for a cover feature in NME, where she spoke of the inspirations behind her music. “It’s me trying to relive the place I grew up in, but also understand that those things caused me so much trauma,” she said. “Even though I was having some of the worst times of my life, when I heard songs like Phoenix’s ‘1901’ or Kings Of Leon’s ‘Sex on Fire’, they used to make me so happy. I wanted an album that felt as nostalgic as those songs.”
The 14-track album will take listeners on a journey that’s representative of Chinouriri’s personal struggles and triumphs. “‘What A Devastating Turn Of Events’ should feel like discovering a personal journey of all the hardship and struggles that have ultimately made me the person I am today,” she commented in the press release.
Chinouriri’s debut single was released back in 2018 and she has since gone on to receive acclaim from the likes of Billboard, Refinery29 and Dazed
