Jodie Foster stars as police chief Liz Danvers in the latest series of True Detective, entitled Night Country. The show is currently airing on HBO, having premiered on 14 January. The season follows the hunt for eight missing men who were located at a research station in Alaska.
The fourth instalment is directed and co-written by Issa López and also features John Hawkes, Fiona Shaw and Kali Reis in the cast. The well-known theme song for Night Country is ‘bury a friend’ by Grammy-winner Billie Eilish, which was co-produced by Eilish’s writing partner and older brother Finneas O’Connell.

The opening credits are set against eerie images of the snowy landscape, adding to the show’s overall atmosphere of intrigue and mystery. Furthermore, at the start of the first episode, a delivery man discovers the station has been deserted, with a severed tongue left behind. Eilish’s ‘bury a friend’ is a fitting selection to introduce the show’s uniquely dark premise.
Eilish’s song was first released in 2019 as part of her debut studio album, ‘when we all fall asleep, where do we go?’. The track references themes of power, control and vulnerability and includes lyrics such as “When we all fall asleep, where do we go
