Dolph Lundgren has expressed his disappointment with the final version of Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom that was shown in cinemas. Lundgren, who plays Nereus, the King of the Atlantean tribe of Xebel, and Amber Heard’s character Mera’s father in the franchise, shared that the original cut and script for the Aquaman sequel were excellent. In an interview with ComicBook.com, Lundgren revealed that the extent to which Amber Heard’s role was cut back due to her defamation trial against Johnny Depp had significantly impacted his involvement as well as the final product.
Lundgren was disappointed that the original script was not adhered to and did not see any reason for reshooting or reshaping the story. Lundgren recounted that he had seen a portion of the original cut and thought it was excellent, so he felt sorry for the audience and not only himself. Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom was released just before Christmas 2023. It stars Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Patrick Wilson as Orm, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, and Randall Park as Stephen Shin among others.
Meanwhile, Momoa had cast uncertainty about his future as the superhero in December 2023. Although Momoa liked the character, he acknowledged that his tenancy as Aquaman depended on the audience’s reaction. Although he had many ideas about what he would like to see in the future for the character, Momoa was not sure whether he would reprise his role. Last year, James Gunn and Peter Safran took on DC as co-CEOs, and since then, various projects have been canceled or postponed, including Henry Cavill’s return as Superman and Wonder Woman 3. Gunn will begin his rebooted DC movie universe with Superman Legacy in 2025.
Ultimately, Lundgren agreed with many viewers that the final cut of Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom did not match expectations. He also hoped that they would return to the original cut of the script, which he considered worthwhile
