The latest season of the crime drama series True Detective has premiered on HBO, with a track from singer Billie Eilish serving as the show’s theme song. The fourth season, titled True Detective: Night Country, stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis. The song, ‘bury a friend’, is taken from Eilish’s 2019 debut album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? True Detective showrunner Issa López explained the choice of track: “It seemed that [‘bury a friend’] was made for the show. So we tried it and it just matched and it was meant to be.”
The opening episode of True Detective: Night Country aired on January 14 and received a positive review from NME, which praised the show for being “scary, suspenseful and smartly constructed to leave you pondering every last plot twist and shock reveal.” Eilish recently won a Golden Globe for Best Song for ‘What Was I Made For?’ from the film Barbie. The song also picked up the Chairman’s Award at the Palm Springs Film Festival earlier this month.
Eilish has also hinted at new music, telling fans in a recent update that her sophomore album is “almost finished” but that it won’t be released “soon”. The singer has also sparked rumours of a collaboration with Bring Me the Horizon after the band’s frontman Oli Sykes replied to one of her Instagram posts.
Eilish has previously explained that ‘What Was I Made For?’ addresses feelings of “existential dread” and “hopelessness”, which she dedicates to anyone who experiences such emotions. Speaking at the Palm Springs Film Festival, Eilish acknowledged her own privileged position but stressed that “I’ve spent a lot of time feeling that way.”
