On August 25th, 1996, in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland, 14-year-old Caroline Glachan was found murdered on the banks of the River Leven in Renton. More than 27 years later, on July 22nd, 2021, two men were sentenced to life in prison for her murder. Robert O’Brien must serve at least 22 years, and Andrew Kelly will have to serve at least 18 years before they can apply for parole. A third individual, Donna Marie Brand, was also found guilty and is awaiting sentencing but was unfit to attend court.

All three defendants had originally denied any involvement in the murder, but they were convicted after a two-week trial at the High Court in Glasgow. The presiding judge, Lord Braid, described the murder as “brutal, depraved and above all wicked”. Caroline had been “infatuated” with O’Brien, according to evidence presented at the trial. On the night of her murder, she arranged to meet O’Brien at a bridge on the River Leven at around midnight.
