Smokey Robinson responds to viral TikTok, explains meaning behind ‘Gasms’ album title

Legendary Motown singer Smokey Robinson has addressed the buzz surrounding his upcoming album, titled “Gasms.” In a TikTok video, the singer explained that the album’s title is not just about sex, but rather any good feeling people might experience. Robinson acknowledged negative comments he has received about singing about “gasms” at his age, adding, “I still have gasms! And I hope I always do.” Robinson’s album, his first of new material since 2009, is set to be released in April 2023.

The album was previewed through its lead single “If We Don’t Have Each Other,” which was released ahead of the album. At 83 years old, Robinson maintains a youthful spirit, stating in a Guardian interview, “At 83, I still feel sexual, and I don’t think that’s going to change. I love waking up with a great feeling about life and love affairs.” Prior to “Gasms,” Robinson released two albums featuring re-worked versions of his older material, collaborating with artists such as Elton John, John Legend, and Steven Tyler.

In 2018, Robinson paid tribute to soul singer Aretha Franklin at her memorial service. In his heartfelt eulogy, Robinson reminisced about their conversations, expressing how much he is going to miss her. Many other celebrities and figures were present to pay their respects, including Stevie Wonder, Ariana Grande, Bill Clinton, and Chaka Khan.

Despite the initial confusion and controversy around the album’s title, the issue seems to be resolved with Robinson’s clarification that “gasms” refer to any happy feeling. Music lovers can look forward to new material from the Motown veteran, who continues to push boundaries and stay true to his spirit at any age
