Neve Campbell opens up about ‘Scream’ franchise future: “I imagine the people at the top are spinning”

In light of recent news that the director and several cast members have departed from the upcoming seventh film in the long-running Scream franchise, Neve Campbell has opened up about her thoughts on the series. The director, Christopher Landon, confirmed his departure in December after being announced for the job in August. He was supposed to take over from the directors of the previous two instalments, who were set to produce the next one. Landon said on social media that the job was a “dream” that turned into a “nightmare”, and that he’d left weeks before.

Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera also left the project. Ortega chose not to reprise her role of Tara Carpenter while Barrera was fired for sharing pro-Palestine posts on social media. Fans vowed to boycott Scream VII in response. Neve Campbell, who previously left the franchise due to a pay dispute, has been approached by Spyglass to return to the franchise as part of a “creative overhaul”, with rumours that Patrick Dempsey could also make a comeback.

In a recent interview with IndieWire, Campbell shared her thoughts on the series, saying that she loves it “for Wes [Craven]”, the late director of the original films. She also expressed sadness that the franchise is struggling at the moment and hopes that the people at the top will make the right decision. When asked if she would return to the franchise, Campbell said she would “Given the right circumstances”. She also said that she still feels that she would not have been treated the same way if she were a man carrying the franchise for 25 years.

Last year, NME reviewed Scream VI favourably, saying that it was not perfect but it is a joyful film nevertheless. The constant meta references became tiresome, but the film still succeeds in capturing the essence of what made the original films so memorable.

In spite of the recent setbacks, it seems that Scream VII will go ahead with new blood and old favourites alike. While some have expressed disappointment at the departures and boycotts, others are excited to see what lies ahead for the franchise.
