UK weather: Bitter Arctic winds to bring snow to UK this week

Snow and ice are set to cause travel disruption across the UK due to a bitterly cold Arctic wind. Temperatures are expected to drop to sub-zero with a “coldest spell of winter so far.” Prolonged periods of snow are expected in northern parts of the UK, and travel delays, potential power cuts, and injuries due to slipping are predicted. Scotland, including Aberdeenshire, the Highlands, Orkney and Shetland Islands, and Northern Ireland, including counties Tyrone and Londonderry, will be particularly heavily impacted.

The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for snow and ice until Tuesday as northerly winds bring in significant snow showers. BBC Weather presenter Stav Danaos said drifting of snow and blizzards are likely in areas of northern Scotland and the Northern Isles, with wintry showers potentially affecting the coastal areas of the North Sea and Irish Sea on Sunday night. Temperatures on Monday will range from 1C to 4C, with the strong northerly wind chill making it feel sub-zero.

On Tuesday, most of Scotland is expected to experience widespread snow, with a mixture of snow, sleet, and rain forecast for northern England and Northern Ireland. A low-pressure area currently in France may move north by Wednesday, potentially resulting in snow falling in parts of southern England, including the Channel Islands and southeast Kent.
