Harry Styles was reportedly considered for a role in the latest reboot of Mean Girls. The musical version of Mean Girls, written by Tina Fey and directed by Arturo Perez Jr. and Samantha Jayne, was released in UK cinemas on Friday. The movie follows Cady Heron, a socially naive teenager who joins a new public school and becomes involved with a “mean” group of girls called the ‘Plastics’. The new film is an adaptation of the 2018 Broadway musical, which in turn was based on Fey’s original 2004 movie.
Interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter, the directors revealed that they had contemplated asking Styles to play the iconic role of Glen Coco in the movie. However, Perez Jr. said that while the team felt the need to include such key lines as “You go, Glen Coco!” in the film, they encountered difficulties in identifying who Glen Coco actually was. As a result, they decided that everyone could be Glen Coco after all.
The new Mean Girls has received mixed reviews from critics, with some describing it as a “sharp, funny” interpretation of the original, but others as a “tuneless mess”. The film stars Reneé Rapp as Regina George, reprising her stage role, and Auli’i Cravalho as Janis Ian, while Fey herself reprises the role of Ms. Norbury.
Styles has yet to comment on whether he was formally approached about the role in the film
