Saffron, a community collective and record label, has teamed up with Black Artist Database (B.A.D.) to offer a series of music production workshops. The three-month program will target women, trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming people globally. The online series will be held alongside Saffron’s members club, Tech Dissect. The sessions, which will run for 90 minutes each, will be held via Zoom at 7:30 PM GMT.
Saffron’s online community members can access the workshops for free, while others can purchase tickets for £8.30. According to the Saffron website, the workshops aim to “support individuals of all experience levels to build confidence, community and technical understanding of music creation using Ableton Live” using a free version of the software available for download. No prior experience with Ableton Live is necessary, as the first session on January 31 will serve as an introduction to the software, with later sessions dedicated to creating original tracks.
Each workshop in the series will be hosted by existing B.A.D. collaborators. Among them are Coco Em, a Nairobi-based artist, and NIKS, B.A.D.’s co-founder. The workshops are designed to help address gender imbalance in the music industry.
Saffron’s founder, Laura Lewis-Paul, told Mixmag: “We’re looking at white, male spaces and making them more diverse.” B.A.D., which recently launched its own record label, was founded to highlight the work of black artists and build a community around their music.
