Liverpool City Council has launched a social work degree apprenticeship programme for those interested in working in children’s social care. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to gain on-the-job experience and develop the necessary skills and knowledge to become a qualified social worker while achieving a social work degree. Five candidates will attend the University of Central Lancashire one day a week and spend the other four days working in a social work team.
The initiative is part of the council’s commitment to grow and expand its workforce by providing opportunities for experienced and enthusiastic people committed to working with children and offering personal development for current staff to support learners. The council is also setting up a social work academy, which will enhance the quality of tailored support and learning opportunities for apprentices.
Training, reflective supervision and shadowing opportunities, as well as one-to-one support from experienced social workers, are just some of the benefits the academy will offer to apprentices, students and staff in Liverpool Children’s Services. Applications for the degree, which begins in January 2024, can be made via the Liverpool City Council website.
Graduates will have a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in social work (England), giving them the certification to apply for registration as a social worker with the regulatory body Social Work England. Following certification, newly qualified social workers will be supported in applying for progression to a higher level. The role requires an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
