On November 25th, several buildings and landmarks in Liverpool lit up in bright orange as part of the “Orange the World” campaign. The global campaign represents hope for a future that is free of violence or abuse against genders. The illuminated landmarks include Liverpool Town Hall, World Museum Liverpool, Merseyside Police Headquarters, and St George’s Hall.
Savera UK’s “No Excuse for Abuse” campaign supports the campaign to end gender-based violence. They marched with Zonta UK through Liverpool city center on the same day that the landmarks were illuminated. The march called for an end to “honour”-based abuse, harmful practices, and all gender-based abuse. Savera UK has seen a recent increase of 6% in new referrals to their service, indicating a growing demand.

The Movema’s Sankofa and Liver Birds then led the march, celebrating the beauty of culture, which made a stop along the route. Khatra Paterson, who is a Savera UK survivor ambassador, shared her story, and readings from Savera UK’s clients were also shared.
Savera UK is a national organization that supports survivors and those at risk of “honour”-based abuse and harmful practices such as forced marriage, female genital mutilation (FGM), and conversion therapy. Zonta UK, on the other hand, advocates for equality, women’s rights, and puts an end to child marriage and gender-based violence. Every year, November 25th marks the UN International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the start of the United Nation’s “Orange the World” campaign and annual 16 days of activism against gender-based violence campaign. The #16Days campaign ends on Human Rights Day, December 10th, and highlights the solidarity and support for all genders
