An attempted murder investigation has been launched after gunshots were fired at a house in Londonderry. Police received a report about three bullets being fired at around 9:15 pm on Saturday in the Ardkill Road area of Ardmore. It was fortunate that the occupant of the house narrowly missed being hit. However, three other people who were inside were not hurt. The police have appealed for information.
A DUP member of Foyle’s assembly, Gary Middleton, called the incident “very concerning.” He said no one was injured or killed as a result of the attack but appealed to people with information to come forward. Mark H Durkan, an SDLP MLA, said the use of guns in neighborhoods could only lead to bad ends and called for weapons to be taken off the streets.
Ciara Ferguson, an MLA from Sinn Féin, described the attack as “extremely reckless and indiscriminate” and was grateful that no one was killed or injured. She also condemned the attack, stating there is no room in society for this behavior and the attackers should stop “immediately.”
The incident highlights the continuing problem of criminality and paramilitary violence in Northern Ireland. Such violence has been a danger in the country for more than four decades, causing the death of many people, including civilians and police officers. Political leaders and society have failed to eradicate these violent acts, which emphasizes the need for more effort in removing weapons from the streets
