A highly sought-after Jawa Star Wars figure has been unearthed for auction for the second time in six months. The original Jawa figure, complete with a vinyl cape, exceeded its estimated value of £10,000-£15,000 when it was sold for £26,670 in July by Hertfordshire’s Excalibur Auctions. The same seller has now discovered another rare Jawa toy, which will also go up for auction on 27 January. It is thought to be one of only around nine such Palitoy-branded Jawa toys in existence.
The toy’s owner received gifts from Palitoy while working for Marvel UK between 1974 and 1979. US-based Kenner was the company that designed the Star Wars toys, while Palitoy was responsible for their distribution throughout Europe. Auctioneer Jonathon Torode called the Jawa figure “a holy grail of Star Wars figure collecting,” explaining that “a lot of people in the US are starting to wake up to the value of Palitoy Star Wars figures.”
Mr Torode added: “There are people who get to a certain age and start to have a disposable income and want to relive their childhood, get all the things they potentially trashed as kids.” Bidding for the Jawa figure is expected to start at a value of £10,000.
