Charges have been brought against a male suspect following gunfire incidents in Liverpool on Wednesday evening, according to an announcement by the Crown Prosecution Service. Leslie Garrett, 49, has been charged with multiple offences, including possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence. In addition, he is facing charges of attempted robbery and possession of ammunition, without a certificate. No one was injured in the attacks, which took place at three locations: outside a cinema in Croxteth, at a local property and at a shop in Norris Green.
Police reports indicated that the first incident occurred when a man demanded cash from a shop assistant at Sangha newsagents, on Lower House Lane. After firing a gun, which produced no casualties, he fled the shop. At around 8.50pm, calls were received regarding shots fired outside the Showcase Cinema at the Stonedale retail park. The gunman was believed to have threatened cinema employees and fired several rounds in the air before making his escape by car. The final shooting was reported an hour and a half later, at a property on Malpas Road.
On 23 April, Garrett was arrested by the police’s armed response team in Fazakerley, thanks to a stun gun. He has been in police custody ever since. The assistant chief constable, Jenn Wilson, commented on the psychological effect of the event on witnesses and the local community. “The shocking and distressing impact these incidents will have had on the shop assistant, the staff at the Showcase Cinema and those filmgoers who found themselves in a lockdown situation in the complex after shots were fired outside the cinema, and the residents of Malpas Road, cannot be underestimated.” Police in high-visibility attire are continuing to patrol the area. Garrett is scheduled to appear in Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on 27 April
