Electronic music label XL Recordings has dropped a teaser for a new release from Burial. The 14-second clip contains what is believed to be new material from the producer, whose signature “cross” logo appears briefly on a triangle-shaped icon in the footage. After 19 years releasing music away from Kode9’s Hyperdub imprint, Burial looks like an upcoming addition to XL’s roster. The new music reverts to the UK producer’s classic club sound following recent ambient projects he’s released.
Fans went wild on Twitter following the January 1st reveal of a new work from Burial, with Maryanne Hobbs hailing it “a strong look for 2024” and Oneman guessing that Burial was set to sign with XL after seeing his logo in the clip. Footage for Burial’s latest work comes on the heels of a July 2023 surprise collaboration with Kode9 called Infirmary/Unknown Summer, which the two Hyperdub affiliates teased with cryptic billboards around East London before its release.
The joint venture marked the first time Burial and Kode9 had worked together in five years, since they created their acclaimed FABRICLIVE 100 mix which marked the end of a 17-year era for the sound series in London. Infirmary/Unknown Summer features critically-lauded tracks from both artists and became available for purchase both digitally and on limited edition vinyl, in black, clear, and silver.
