Storm Gerrit: 'Tornado' damages 100 homes in Stalybridge

A “localised tornado” has caused damage to approximately 100 homes in the Tameside area of Greater Manchester. The police declared a major incident on Wednesday night, due to the severity of damage and potential risk to public safety. The worst-affected areas were Millbrook and Carrbrook in Stalybridge, where roofs were torn off houses, trees were uprooted, and walls collapsed due to Storm Gerrit. However, there were no reported injuries.

Fire and ambulance crews, as well as officials from Electricity North West and the Council, were called out to multiple sites across the borough. A rest centre was also set up at Dukinfield Town Hall. Greater Manchester Police have stated that the damage was caused by a “localised tornado.” Ch Supt Mark Dexter has said that “many residents [were] displaced from their properties during the night,” and the highest priority is keeping people safe.

The police have advised those who have been displaced to avoid returning or entering their properties, which have sustained significant damage until they have been checked by structural engineers. While the incident has understandably caused some disruption, safety is the number one priority. People are being urged to avoid the area where possible, and take extra care when navigating the roads in Stalybridge and the surrounding areas due to debris.

If anyone has experienced the “localised tornado” in their area, the BBC encourages them to share their experiences and how they were affected. The public can get in touch via email or social media. The police have not yet confirmed when the area will return to normal, and further updates will follow when they are available
