Doctor Who: Welsh landscapes the perfect backdrop, says Ncuti Gatwa

The new Doctor Who, Ncuti Gatwa, is set to make his debut as the Time Lord in the show’s highly anticipated Christmas special. Despite the attention that comes with playing such a beloved character, Gatwa sees himself as just a part of a bigger ensemble, particularly as there are some notable cameos in this year’s festive episode. TV presenter Davina McCall has a role in the Christmas special, and Gatwa joked that she “steals the show”.

Aside from the star-studded cast, Gatwa is keen to highlight Wales’ stunning scenery as a key factor in the show’s success. He spent five years filming in the country for Sex Education and the latest Doctor Who series, and he described the landscapes as being “mythical”. Gatwa’s joy in filming in Wales is clear and he has praised Swansea-born writer Russell T Davies for crafting a “fresh and scary” world for the show. Gatwa believes that Davies has been able to reflect issues and conversations from society in the UK and around the world, making Doctor Who much more than just a TV drama.

Fans caught a glimpse of the new Doctor earlier this month in a special episode, giving them a taste of what to expect on Christmas Day. Gatwa’s debut as the Time Lord comes as part of the show’s ongoing 60th-anniversary celebrations, and he is keen to follow in the footsteps of the previous actors who played the iconic role. He describes the Doctor as being like “a piece of furniture in the house”, and he’s proud to be taking on the character, which he sees as being like a member of the family.

The Christmas special is set to air on BBC One Wales and iPlayer at 5:55 pm GMT on December 25th, and fans are eagerly waiting to see Gatwa’s take on the role. Despite his nerves ahead of the premiere, he watched it alone and celebrated with a glass of something special. With cameos, Welsh landscapes, and a new Doctor at the helm, this year’s festive episode promises to be a memorable one
