The Christmas traditions of Albert Square are about to kick off, with EastEnders fans eagerly anticipating this year’s special since the show’s February teaser hinted at a big mystery. The storyline, known as The Six, features six of Walford’s favourite female characters involved in a murder. These women include Sharon, Kathy, Stacey, Suki, Denise and Linda, but viewers will have to wait to find out who the killer is.
The February teaser showed various scenes with suggestive hints, including Linda scrubbing blood from the floor, blood on Stacey’s hands and Denise holding a broken bottle. Suki and Kathy’s faces filled with shock as Sharon checked the body and whispered “he’s dead”, before the camera pans to the mystery dead man’s cufflinks. It is clear that a male character will be killed off and found on the floor of The Queen Vic pub, but their identity and killer remain unknown.
The suspects include Keanu, due to wed Sharon on Christmas Day and who recently faked their son’s kidnapping, and Rocky, whose relationship with Kathy is rocky after he admitted he’d burned down her iconic cafĂ©. Ravi made an enemy of former lover Denise when he ended their affair and started seeing her daughter, and Denise’s husband, Jack, recently hooked up with Stacey. Meanwhile, Nish, Suki’s husband, rumbled her relationship with disgraced solicitor Eve, who he tried to have killed, and completing the list of potential victims is Dean, a rapist who’s returned to the Square to torment his victim and sister-in-law, Queen Vic landlady Linda.
The key to understanding EastEnders at Christmas, according to comedian and superfan Sooz Kempner, is realising that not everything that happened in the year is important. Instead, focus on The Six and what they’ve been up to, and the familiar faces can help viewers keep track. For those who haven’t watched the show in a while, Hayley Minns, a features writer at the Sun newspaper, says that the writers probably know that there are a lot of people watching who do not usually watch the show and the important thing is to just sit back and enjoy the drama unfold.
The EastEnders Christmas Day episode will be on BBC One at 21:45 GMT and on iPlayer afterwards
