A woman in South Lanarkshire has been found dead and police have launched a murder investigation. Ann Coll, aged 61, was discovered with serious injuries at a flat in Rutherglen, and pronounced dead at the scene on Friday. Following a post-mortem examination, police said they are treating the death as murder. Officers have been conducting door-to-door inquiries in the local area.
“Our thoughts are with Ann’s family and we are providing them with support at this very difficult time,” said Detective Chief Inspector Lynsey Watters of the major investigation team. “Our investigation into her murder is ongoing and I would urge anyone who can help to get in touch as soon as you can. I would ask anyone who believes they may have seen or heard anything which may be suspicious around the area to get in touch with us.” She added that there will be an additional police presence in the area while investigations continue.
Residents have expressed shock at the news. One neighbour said that they “couldn’t believe it”. Another said that they “hadn’t seen anything out of the usual, nothing that would have made me suspect anything like this was going to happen”. Tributes have been left to Ann, who is said to have been a “lovely lady”, and who was “very kind and caring”.
A spokesperson for the police said that the investigation is ongoing and that they are following “positive lines of enquiry”. They added that anyone with information can contact them in confidence by calling 101, or can report information anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111
