Dublin school stabbings: Man charged with attempted murder

Dublin District Court charged a 50-year-old man named Riad Bouchaker with the attempted murder of three children in a stabbing attack outside Gaelscoil Cholaiste Mhuire Primary School in Parnell Square East last month. Bouchaker, who is homeless, is also facing charges of assault causing serious harm to a school care worker. The children and school care worker were among four people injured in the stabbing on November 23rd.

The accused appeared before the Dublin District Court clad in a green jacket, black top, green trousers, and slippers. During the brief hearing, Bouchaker spoke only to an Arabic interpreter while Det Sgt Padraig Cleary informed the court that Bouchaker was arrested at 12:51 pm local time on Thursday and provided details of the charges, including possession of a 36cm kitchen knife.

In addition to the attempted murder charges, Bouchaker was charged with assaulting two other children, a young boy and girl, as well as assaulting a French man who intervened to help stop the attack. The incident caused rioting, resulting in the largest deployment of public order police in the history of Ireland.

The accused’s legal team cannot be identified by the media due to “safety concerns.” The presiding judge has ordered the defendant’s legal team to receive any necessary medical attention while in custody and a list of medication was provided to the prison. The judge has remanded Bouchaker into custody at Cloverhill Prison and is scheduled to re-appear in court via videolink on December 28th
