Two teenagers have been jailed for over ten and 14 years respectively for the “senseless atrocity” killing of a 17-year-old boy named Harley Brown in Huddersfield on 20 February. The attack on Harley, which was described by the judge as “sustained and brutal,” lasted for an unknown number of strikes and took place on Kings Mill Lane as the attackers, who were under the influence of nitrous oxide, chased him.

Before the sentence was given, scuffles broke out in court between supporters of Harley and those there for the defendants who could not be named due to their age, with police intervening to restore order. A life sentence with a minimum of 10 years and three months in detention was given to the younger defendant, leading one person to declare the tariff “a joke” and walk out. The elder defendant received a minimum of 14 years and six months in detention.

Harley had moved to Huddersfield from Deptford, London in 2020 to start a “safe” new life with his mother who became concerned he was being groomed. In the days following the “unprovoked, sustained and merciless” attack, Harley’s family said he would be deeply missed and remembered for his “loving personality, beautiful smile and cheeky sense of humour”.

The elder attacker had been seen by witnesses to discard a machete-style knife as he fled the scene, which was later found by a member of the public. The prosecution had suggested the attack may have been gang-related, but the judge countered that there was no evidence of motive
