Crash death biker's widow says killer's sentence is no deterrent

The widow of a Brechin motorcyclist who lost his life following a collision with a car has said that others must learn from his “senseless” death. Jon Marsh died in November 2022 when a driver pulled out of a junction, causing him to collide with her rear driver door. Angela Addis, the school teacher behind the wheel of the car, was recently ordered to carry out 140 hours of unpaid work and placed under supervision for a year, in addition to being banned from driving for the same period. Addis was also reprimanded by Sheriff Gregor Murray for causing Marsh’s death by driving carelessly. Marsh’s widow, Tracey Marsh, criticized the sentence, stating that it did not act as a deterrent to others.

In an interview outside Dundee Sheriff Court, Marsh stated, “Carelessness is forgetting where you placed your house keys, or letting a pan boil over. It is not the act of taking someone’s life and shattering the world of those close to them.” Friends and family of Marsh were outraged by the sentence and expressed their disappointment inside the courtroom.

Despite having a clear view of 200 metres of road, Addis failed to pay attention and turned into Marsh’s path. Despite several passers-by stopping to help, there was no response from him, and he died at the scene. Windshield Repair Austin Tx

Marsh was an experienced biker, and his wife said that the sentence given to Addis was inadequate and ineffective in making others learn from his tragic death. She highlighted that Jon’s death must mean more to Scottish lawmakers and that people must be encouraged to take extra care on the road. A total of 25 motorcyclists were killed in collisions in 2022 in Scotland, with an additional 280 seriously injured, according to Scottish government figures.

Addis’s counsel, David Nicolson, highlighted in court the remorse, shame, and guilt that Addis has experienced since Marsh’s death. While his statement evokes sympathy, Tracey Marsh condemns the sentence passed, claiming it will neither act as a deterrent nor remind drivers of their collective responsibility for vulnerable road users
