Mark Williams, who returned to Hardgroove earlier this year with ‘Bring You Love’ after an eight-year break, has released his second EP of the year on Ben Sims’ label to close out 2023. The deep and experimental ‘Hornchurch Hustlers EP’ was created due to Williams’ hiatus from music, describing how he had the opportunity to reflect and process his music productions. According to Williams, experiment with new sounds reminded him of his love for music. Ben Sims approached Williams regarding creating an EP for his label, to which Williams replied, “great, can’t wait!”
The release is a five-track EP that’s unyielding in nature. It begins with ‘Next 21s’, packed with irresistible percussives and piercing stabs to create a techno affair that’s perfect for peak time. Then ‘Sometimes’ takes over, bringing a thicker set of percussives with influences taken from liquid d’n’b. ‘The Groove Has Begun’ marks the crescendo of the EP, signaling the beginning of experimental sounds for the closing offerings. ‘East Side Dub’ and ‘East Side – Part 2’ are the closing tracks, drawing on fusions of jazz and broken techno and a beatless, modern soul, respectively.
