Treforest fire: Body found after industrial estate explosion

Following an explosion and fire at Treforest Industrial Estate in Rhondda Cynon Taf, South Wales, a body has been found at the site. South Wales Police located the body during their search after the Wednesday night event. Formal identification has not taken place and the police are supporting the family of a person who had been missing. A major incident was declared for several hours, and at least one building was destroyed. Several ambulances were also at the site.

The fire was in a 60,000 sq ft warehouse called Rizla House. It houses a gym, a towel manufacturer, a food laboratory, and a telecoms service firm. A two-story building was at risk of collapse, and seven pumps were present at the site, along with an incident command unit. Emergency services are still present at the incident’s location on Severn Road on the estate.

Det Supt Richard Jones said, “Our thoughts are with the family of the missing person. Now that the fire has been brought under control, we will move to the investigative phase to find out what caused this explosion and subsequent fire. Roads are gradually being reopened although some roads and businesses in the area will still be affected.” The cause of the explosion will be subject to police investigation.

Alex Davies-Jones, MP for Pontypridd, called the discovery of the body “heartbreaking” and “devastating for all involved”. Stephen Davies, who was at a nearby gym when the explosion took place, said that he and his friend saw the stairwell by the entrance of the cafe explode. Walls caved in, and it was very scary.
