Thousands of football fans playing Whamageddon during a Northampton Town F.C game had their game ruined when the DJ dropped ‘Last Christmas’. The cult game, which encourages players to last as long as possible without hearing the 1986 Christmas song, came to an abrupt halt when Matt Facer, the DJ for the League Two football team, played the song. The incident was met with backlash from the fans and Facer has since apologised for the error.
Facer, also known as DJ Matty, claimed that he didn’t know the cult game taken by fans so seriously. In an interview, he said: “I never knew people took it so seriously. I gave it a spin, thinking it would be quite funny to wipe out 7,000 people who couldn’t avoid it, but clearly, it isn’t funny.” The DJ has since apologised for the incident and said that he will not play the song during Northampton’s next home game against Fleetwood Town to “avoid upsetting the Lancashire fans”.
The Whamageddon game has become popular over the years, and now has its own dedicated website, merchandise, and a set of rules players must stick by, dubbed a “survival game”. Fans of the game will have been disappointed with the DJ’s actions, but it appears that the situation has been resolved with Facer’s apology.
The DJ’s incident highlighted the popularity of the game, and perhaps other DJs and entertainers will take a more considered approach during December’s events as they gauge the cultural sensitivity of their audience to allow fans to participate in the survival game without being caught out. For Facer, despite the DJ’s error, the fans have forgiven him and are looking forward to the team’s next home game
