British music group Massive Attack has announced its first UK show in five years, and the concert is expected to highlight the band’s 25 years of climate activism. The show, called “Act 1.5,” will be the initial product of Massive Attack’s collaboration with renowned climate scientists and analysts from the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research. This includes the commissioning of the only Paris 1.5 compatible roadmap for the decarbonisation of the live music sector.
The event is set for August 25 next year at Clifton Downs, and the measures for decarbonisation include a local pre-sale for Bristol, Bath Gloucestershire, Swindon, and Taunton postcodes to discourage private car travel. Moreover, the concert will run on 100% renewable energy, and there will be a rail incentive initiative, a meat-free arena, free post-show electric shuttles to major rail hubs, 100% zero-to-landfill waste removal, and more. There will also be the creation of a new climate-resilient woodland plantation in the South West area, as a legacy of the event, in partnership with Train Hugger and the Royal Forestry Society.
The band’s members, Robert Del Naja and Grant Marshall, have emphasized that live music must drastically reduce primary emissions and consider fan travel. They noted that there are no longer reasons to excuse offsetting, diluted declarations, and endless seminars in terms of climate change action. The duo initially planned a “prototype” of the concert in Liverpool but were hindered by both the coronavirus pandemic and the band’s boycott of the Arms Fair held in the venue.
Liverpool, however, became the very first city in the world to commit to global gold standards of Paris 1.5 compatible carbon reductions as a licensing condition for large live music events. The band is pleased to play in its home city again and “to do it in the right way,” as they expressed. Tickets for Massive Attack’s “Act 1.5” are available here.
