Sutton fire: Mother in court charged with manslaughter of four sons

Deveca Rose, a 29-year-old mother from Wallington, Sutton, has been granted conditional bail after appearing in court charged with manslaughter and child abandonment. The charges relate to the tragic death of her four sons, aged three and four, who died in a fire at their home on 16 December 2021.

Dressed in black, Ms Rose appeared at Bromley Magistrates’ Court and gave no indication of her pleas. District Judge Sarah Turnock added conditions to Ms Rose’s bail, warning her that if found guilty, she faced a significant period of imprisonment.

Firefighters in breathing apparatus removed the four brothers from the mid-terrace house and gave them CPR. Despite their efforts, the boys were pronounced dead at the hospital.

The case has been sent to the Old Bailey, where the defendant is due to attend a plea and trial preparation hearing on 8 January. The community expressed their condolences by leaving flowers near the scene of the fire.
