Daniel Avery shares redux EP and reissue of ‘Drone Logic’ album

UK techno DJ and producer Daniel Avery has celebrated the 10th anniversary of his debut album ‘Drone Logic’ by reissuing it through Erol Alkan’s ‘Phantasy’ label and releasing a three-track EP comprised of new live versions of songs from the album. The final track on the EP, ‘Sensing Light (Reprise)’, was premiered via Bandcamp, with all proceeds from sales being donated to The Trussell Trust, a UK-based charity that works to combat hunger and poverty. Avery explained that the new versions of the tracks were “companion pieces from a different camera angle”, designed to sit alongside the originals.

Avery also spoke about the importance of ‘Drone Logic’ to his career, saying that it “gifted me a creative life, one that feels as exciting today as it ever has done”. A Rough Trade East event to launch the reissue included a signing and Q&A session with Avery, Alkan and James Greenwood. Mixing magazine earlier named Avery as the ‘techno auteur doing things with a distinct touch’.

Avery, who has a background in guitar bands, has recently collaborated with Nine Inch Nails main man Trent Reznor as well as working with Suede’s Bernard Butler and in-demand producer Four Tet. ‘Drone Logic’ reached number nine in the UK dance chart upon its original release in 2013 and was named one of Resident Advisor’s albums of the year.

The new EP comes as Avery continues work on his third album, his first since 2018’s Song For Alpha. Though no release date has been confirmed the producer teased the project last year as being “quietly building in the background”.

Last month, Mixmag reported that Avery had loaned his voice and his track ‘All I Need’ to an anti-Brexit video, aimed at galvanising young people to register to vote ahead of the general election
