Starmer faces Gaza protests during Glasgow visit

During a recent visit to Glasgow, Sir Keir Starmer, leader of the Labour Party in the UK, was met with protests due to his refusal to call for a ceasefire in the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict. As Sir Keir arrived at Glasgow Central Station on a train, he was confronted by a passenger who asked him why he had not yet called for a ceasefire, adding, “Keir, how many more children in Palestine have to die before you call for a ceasefire?”

Protests took place outside the train station as well as the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Congress Road, where Sir Keir was attending a fundraising dinner. The demonstrations eventually resulted in the arrest and charging of a 33-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman with “disorder offences.”

Sir Keir’s official stance is that a ceasefire would not be appropriate, as it would only freeze the conflict and embolden Hamas. Although this position may be met with disagreement from some members of the public, he has not wavered in his argument that a ceasefire would ultimately do more harm than good.

Despite the protests, Sir Keir continued with his visit to Glasgow. It remains to be seen if his refusal to call for a ceasefire will have any impact on his political standing or public opinion
